25 years of German Unification
Germany is celebrating 25 years since unification on 3 October 1990, 11 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In the past 25 years, the Bank has invested some EUR 31 billion in the six federal states concerned – Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
The EIB has backed a number of the projects which have helped to realise the rebirth of Berlin and the development of industry around Dresden and Jena. Below are just a few examples of EIB projects which have been instrumental in bringing economic growth and job opportunities to the former East Germany.
Urban Renewal Potsdamer Platz
The renewal of the famous Potsdamer Platz is perhaps the most visible urban development and real estate investment in Berlin financed by the Bank, right on the border between east and west.
Universitätsklinikum Jena-Lobeda
This university clinic is a more recent example of health infrastructure investment. The whole university campus will be rebuilt and modernised with the support of EIB finance.
