    Description
    Objectives

    The project consists of the expansion of the container facilities and improvement of rail and road connections in the port of Barcelona to accommodate future traffic growth.

    The project is needed to cope with a rapidly increasing traffic serving the Port of Barcelona’s powerful hinterland, covering not only Catalonia but the vast Euro-mediterranean region for which the port has become a main logistic gate.

    Environmental aspects
    Procurement

    The project falls under Annex I of EU EIA Directive, requiring a full EIA. The Project has been the subject of two EIAs, which included environmental impact studies and public consultation. The corresponding environmental authorizations were issued by the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente and published in the Spanish Official Journal on 02/09/98 and 10/07/00. EIA and biodiversity assessment requirements as well as status of environmental mitigation and monitoring for the project will be checked during appraisal.

    The Bank will require the promoter to ensure that contracts for the implementation of the project have been/shall be tendered in accordance with the relevant applicable EU procurement legislation (Directive 2004/17/EEC), with parallel publication of tender notices in the EU Official Journal, as and where appropriate.
