Pending the holding of new elections, Mr George Zanias was appointed Minister of Finance in the caretaker government that was sworn in on 17 May 2012.
Mr Zanias also becomes EIB Governor for the Hellenic Republic.
Mr Zanias is Professor of Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business. He was until recently Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, an advisory body under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Finance.
He served as Chairman of the Department of European and International Economic Studies at the Athens University of Economics and Business over the periods 1996-1998 and 2004-2008.
From 2001 to 2004, Mr Zanias worked as Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
From 1998 to 2001, he was Chairman and Scientific Director of the Centre of Planning and Economic Research in Greece.
Mr Zanias studied economics at the Economic University of Athens and at Reading University and holds a Phd from Oxford University.
