    The EIB's Economics Department organized its first Roundtable Discussion on Banking in sub-Saharan Africa. It brought together central bank governors, chief economists and chief executive officers from several African banks, as well as representatives of our partner development institutions. Speakers included Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor, Central Bank of NigeriaI, Mthuli Ncube, chief economist, African Development Bank, Admassu Tadesse, President and CEO PTA Bank, Jean-Louis Ekra, President, African Export-Import Bank, Debora Revoltella, Director, Economics Department EIB and Pim Van Ballekom, Vice-President EIB whose responsibilities include Sub-Saharan Africa.

    The discussion focused on challenges and opportunities in the banking sector with the view to better shape the EIB’s strategy for its financial sector operations. The Roundtable had three sessions, addressing current developments and trends in the banking sector, access to finance, and financing of infrastructure projects. In parallel, the Economics Department published a report, which reflected the discussion topics.
