The European Commission – Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB) hosted a webinar: ‘Financial needs in the agriculture and agri-food sectors in Portugal’, on Wednesday, 6 October 2021 from 10.30 until 13.30 CEST / from 9.30 until 12.30 WEST.

The webinar was opened by Maria do Céu Antunes, Minister of Agriculture, Portugal and Mihail Dumitru, Deputy Director-General, DG AGRI, European Commission. It focused on the financial environment in which farmers and food processors operate in Portugal. The EAFRD managing authority for Portugal and the participating financial intermediaries shared their experiences with the implementation of the EAFRD financial guarantee instrument set up under the 2014-2020 Rural Development Programme. Speakers present the outcomes from a fi-compass study analysing the financial supply and demand for agriculture and agri-food sectors in Portugal, as well as existing constraints on the market.

With a view to support managing authorities in their programming exercise in post-2020 period, fi-compass has recently published a study on financial needs in the agriculture and agri-food sectors in 24 EU Member States. Based on the feedback of 7,600 farmers and 2,200 agri-food companies across the EU, the 24 country-specific fi-compass reports present the main challenges faced by these two groups when it comes to access to finance.

Below is the executive summary of the country-specific report regarding Portugal:
