By letter dated 26 February 2018, the Kingdom of the Netherlands nominated, by common accord with the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mr Otto de Smeth for appointment as an Alternate Member of the Board of Directors of the EIB to succeed Mr Pieter-Jan van Steenkiste, who had tendered his resignation.
By letter dated 1 March 2018, the Board of Governors was invited to vote on the proposed appointment.
The decision to appoint Mr Otto de Smeth was taken on 22 March 2018, the date on which the requisite majority of Governors' votes was reached.
The term of office of Mr Otto de Smeth will expire in 2018 at the end of the day either of the Annual Meeting or of the approval of the financial statements for the previous financial year, whichever is the later.
Mr de Smeth is currently Senior policy advisor at the Foreign Financial Affairs Directorate in the Ministry of Finance. He holds a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Amsterdam.
