EIB welcomes progress on COVAX support for global access to COVID-19 vaccines
3 February 2021
The President of the European Investment Bank today welcomed publication of the first interim distribution forecast of the COVAX initiative marking a key step in enabling equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines.
“COVAX shows how multilateral cooperation can help to tackle the global impact of COVID-19. Today’s confirmation of the first distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to vulnerable groups and front-line health workers around the world brings hope to millions. The EUR 400 million EIB support for COVAX, as part of Team Europe, was crucial to make this distribution possible, because early contributions to COVAX-AMC have led to earlier availability, which is the critical impact of the EU Bank’s support for vaccine equity.” said Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank.
Publication of the interim distribution will enable national vaccination programmes to be planned by governments and health systems around the world. Final allocations will be published in due course.
Last December the European Investment Bank agreed to provide €400 million of financing to support the participation of low and middle income economies in COVAX Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC) as part of Team Europe’s support for the multilateral initiative. This has helped to accelerate up-front investment essential to deliver vaccine doses as soon as they become available.
The COVAX initiative aims to reach at least 20% of the population of lower-income countries across the world in 2021.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Montpellier-based medtech startup Quantum Surgical have announced the signature of a €15 million financing agreement. The operation to finance the commercial launch of the Epione® medical robot for the minimally invasive treatment of liver cancer comes under total financing of €40 million. Led by the global life sciences investment firm Ally Bridge Group with an investment of €20 million, it also includes financing from Bpifrance and Caisse d’Epargne Languedoc-Roussillon, bringing the total amount of funds raised by Quantum Surgical since its creation in 2017 to €50 million.
The Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB) on Wednesday approved the cohesion orientation paper that sets out the new framework for the EIB’s cohesion action for 2021-2027. The Board, composed of representatives of all EU Member States, made more funding available for public and private sector projects in cohesion regions — those with a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita below the EU average. The decision also lays the foundation for increasing climate action and environmental lending in poorer regions, fostering innovation in cohesion regions and ensuring that EIB financing complements EU cohesion policy funds in the new seven-year EU budget. The EIB’s cohesion financing, advisory and fund management services aim to reduce regional disparities by supporting projects in the European Union’s poorer regions.
The Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB) today decided to accelerate targeted support for global climate adaptation and cohesion investment across Europe. It also approved a framework which calls for the respect by EU Bank financing beneficiaries to align with objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate, which aims at containing global warming under 1.5 C°.
