The role of public investment as a tool for reviving growth and structurally improving the economy is coming back to the fore. Using NUTS 2 level data of 98 EU regions, this working paper analyses the role of local public investment in stimulating private investment and in providing support to growth and development. Its main finding is that local public investment has a positive effect on private investment in the same area. (There is no evidence for reverse causality.) The findings also show that local public investment in education, training, research and development, public administration operations and territorial infrastructures boosts GDP growth.
