The EIB has worked with Hungary since 1990. We have upgraded Budapest airport and the country’s roads and railway networks. Recently, the Bank also invested in health care and education. With our support, Budapest’s University of Sport Sciences and Physical Education and the University of Pécs can now offer better study and research facilities to students.
The EIB also helped the expansion of small and larger companies, such as ELI Network, a pioneer in laser research. Our finance and advice reaches across the country to lift the economy and make lives better.
The EIB has provided Hungary with over EUR 17.9 billion affordable and long-term financing for 176 projects, creating job opportunities and boosting growth.

EFSI is the central pillar of the Investment Plan for Europe. It helps overcome the investment gap, boost jobs and GDP and improve the lives of people across Europe, including Hungary. It finances strategic investments in key areas such as infrastructure, research and innovation, education, renewable energy and energy efficiency as well as providing risk finance to SMEs. All corporate projects signed in Hungary since 2015 benefited from an EFSI guarantee. These projects cover various sectors, from the circular economy and energy to industry and health care.
