North Macedonia and the EIB

The EIB has been active in North Macedonia since 1977.

We have financed the country’s key transport, energy supply and water treatment infrastructure. One example of our impact is the wastewater treatment plant in Skopje contributing to improve public health and tackle pollution in the Vardar River.

Through our network of local banks, we also support SMEs, which represent 80% of total EIB lending in the country, including those active in the knowledge economy, energy and environmental protection. Through the Macedonian Bank for Development Promotion, we helped two families turn their small businesses into top national brands.

We work with local and international partners to support transformational investments that deliver economic opportunities, strengthen international transport links and improve people’s lives.
