Description
The project consists of construction of a waste treatment facility for residual waste and source separated bio-waste, and a leachate treatment plant and new disposal cell at the existing Barje landfill. The new facilities will serve 33 municipalities in central Slovenia with a population of around 610 000.
Objectives
The main objectives of the project are to increase the diversion of waste from landfills and to increase the recovery of materials and energy from residual waste. The landfill components will establish new capacity for residues to be landfilled and will ensure appropriate treatment of leachate generated in the landfill.

Environmental aspects
The project falls under Annex II of the EIA Directive and has been screened in by the competent authority. The status and details of EIA procedures shall be verified during the appraisal. The project is expected to have a positive net environmental and social impact, considering its contribution to increasing the materials and energy recovery from waste and to decreasing the environmental and climate change impact from current residual waste disposal. It will contribute to compliance with the Waste Framework directive 2008/98/EC and the Landfill Directive 99/31/EC. Possible impact on Natura 2000 or other environmentally sensitive areas will be verified during appraisal.
Procurement
The Bank will require the Promoter to ensure that contracts for the implementation of the project have been/shall be tendered in accordance with the relevant applicable EU procurement legislation (Dir. 2004/18/EC and Dir. 2007/66/EC), with publication of tender notices in the EU Official Journal, as and where required.
