    Description

The project concerns the provision of high speed broadband access in uncovered areas in Italy. A mixture of fixed as well as wireless technologies will be utilised.

    Objectives

The project will reduce the broadband gap within Italy by extending the coverage to unserved areas or improving the service quality.

    Sector(s)

    Proposed EIB finance (Approximate amount)

Indicative amount of EUR 550 million.

    Total cost (Approximate amount)

Indicative amount of EUR 2.1 billion.

    Environmental aspects

Investments in fixed telecommunications infrastructures do not fall under Annex I or II of Directive 85/337/EEC as amended by Directives 97/11/EEC and 2003/35/EEC. Project specific environmental details will be assessed during appraisal, including the possible impacts on protected flora and fauna (Habitats 92/43/EEC and Birds 79/409/EEC).

    Procurement

According to utility directive 2004/17/EC, the telecommunications sector is exempt from public procurement procedures due to its competitive nature.
