Objectives

The project intends to finance a company based in Finland for the construction and equipment of an innovative industrial biorefinery for the transformation of an invasive seaweed (Sargassum sp.) into alginate and fucoidan; and for the research and development of additional marketable co-products.

The project aims to build and operate a first-of-a-kind biorefinery in Finland to industrially scale Origin by Ocean's solvent free technology for converting invasive Sargassum seaweed into high value bio-based ingredients, notably alginate and fucoidan. It seeks to demonstrate technical and commercial viability while delivering environmental benefits through circular bioeconomy solutions and enabling replication at future sites closer to Sargassum bloom areas.
