    Description
    Objectives

Widening to 2x2 lanes of a 53 km long section of the MC27 regional road between the towns of Nabeul and Kélibia, and construction of a bypass on a new alignment around the city of Korba.

The project is included in the Five-Year Development Plan of Tunisia 2016-2020 under the Voiries Structurantes programme. Current traffic levels on the existing road are close to capacity and sections in urban and sub-urban areas suffer regular congestion. The project will provide some relief with two additional lanes in the interurban sections and a bypass around the town of Korba.

    Environmental aspects
    Procurement

If the project was located within the EU, it would fall under Annex I of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive 2011/92/EC (as amended by Directive 2014/52/EU), thus requiring a full EIA. One main EIA procedure including a public consultation has been carried out in accordance with national legislation in Tunisia. A Resettlement Policy Framework has been prepared. The Bank investigates environmental and social aspects during appraisal and verifies that the promoter has followed the relevant EU environmental and social principles, standards and practices. The Bank also verifies the acceptability of the project in terms of likely environmental impacts and proposed mitigation and compensation measures.

The Bank will require the promoter to ensure that implementation of the project will be done in accordance with the Bank's Guide to Procurement.
