    Objectives

Construction of eight grade-separated interchanges along the main inner bypass (Rocade km4) of the city of Sfax, in Tunisia.

The project is part of the city's strategic multimodal mobility plan and shall eliminate key urban bottlenecks on the main bypass of Sfax. It is in line with the over-arching city and country strategy to increase competitiveness through the provision of essential infrastructure. The project meets the Bank's objectives for transport lending and is in line with the Bank's mandate for the region. The project includes a climate change adaptation component consisting of incremental improvements of the drainage systems around the new interchanges and connected to the city's canal along the bypass.

    Procurement

The Bank has taken and will continue to have a leading role in ensuring adequate standards are met for ESIAs (Environmental and Social Impact Assessments) as well as the RPF (Resettlement Policy Framework), RAPs (Resettlement Action Plans) and Road Safety Audits (RSA). The Bank has organised training courses (using an external consultant) in the promoter's premises to strengthen the promoter's capacity to carry out the assessment of environmental and social risks, including appropriate public consultation. The services have actively contributed to provide support to the project implementation unit to reinforce the promoter's capacity and mitigate project implementation risks.
