The EIB has observer status at the 18th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 18), the annual meeting of global leaders and climate action specialists. This year, it will be held in Doha, Qatar from 26 November to 7 December.

Major negotiation topics will be the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action and the Green Climate Fund. As the EU Bank, the EIB supports the Union’s goal of low-carbon and climate-resilient growth in Europe and beyond. EIB support in these sectors is one of the most substantial provided by any international financial institution.

At COP 18, the Bank participates in a number of events in the EU Pavilion and the UNFCCC area. Here, we also have an information stand. Our delegation consists of high-level experts and officials, including Vice-President Simon Brooks responsible for Climate Change and Environment.

The EIB is taking part in the ‘UNFCCC Momentum for Change:  Innovative Financing for Climate-friendly Investment’ launch event organised by the World Economic Forum. We discuss  the challenge of improving energy access and mitigating climate change at the Doha Business Day organised by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. At the World Climate Summit, the EIB is discussing how the roll out of next generation of smart infrastructure is essential for greening cities and nations.

We are also organising a side event, looking at ways to develop innovative, low-carbon investment projects outside Europe.
