Description
Objectives

The railway section Szajol-Püspökladány is part of the main line No. 100 Budapest-Szolnok-Debrecen-Nyíregyháza-Záhony (transhipment facility at the Slovak/Ukrainian border). The project mainly concerns the rehabilitation of the existing double track (67.15 km) and the renewal of the catenary and of the signalling and telecommunications equipment.

The project contributes to the objective of promoting sustainable transport on the TEN-T core and comprehensive networks, with an expected increase in rail usage thanks to a shift from road to railways.

Environmental aspects
Procurement

The investments are part of the transport operational programme 2007-2013, which underwent an SEA procedure and the environmental effects were assessed. Given the nature of the project, it falls under Annex II of the EIA Directive (2011/92/EU) and the need for an EIA must be verified at the time of allocation. For this major project, a preliminary environmental impact assessment was performed. On the basis of the findings of this assessment, the competent authorities require a full EIA for the Szajol-Püspökladány reconstruction. The environmental permit has been issued for the project, which is not expected to have any impact on Natura 2000 sites.

The promoter is a public company obliged to comply with European and national public procurement legislation. All of the works and services related to the implementation of the project have already been procured accordingly. The construction works and associated supervision were procured by the promoter in accordance with Directive 2004/18/EC. All tender notices for construction and services were published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) and all the contracts have been awarded.
