Description

El Banco Europeo de Inversiones (BEI) contribuye a la política de cooperación y ayuda al desarrollo de la Unión Europea en los Estados de África, del Caribe y del Pacífico1. En la actualidad, el BEI opera en dichas regiones en el marco del Acuerdo de Asociación ACP-UE de Cotonú que fue suscrito en junio de 2000 en Cotonú (Benín) por un período de veinte años y posteriormente revisado en 2005. El Acuerdo entre los Estados ACP y la Comunidad Europea y sus Estados Miembros está basado en distintos instrumentos instaurados para reducir la pobreza en los Estados ACP.

Además del FI, el BEI está autorizado a conceder préstamos en los Estados ACP con cargo a sus recursos propios por valor de hasta 2 000 millones de EUR durante el período 2008-2013. Las operaciones con cargo a recursos propios del BEI están cubiertas por una garantía específica de los Estados Miembros de la UE.

De forma paralela, en virtud de una Decisión del Consejo de la Unión Europea, en noviembre de 2001 se estableció un Fondo de Inversión similar para los PTU.

El BEI está autorizado a conceder préstamos en los PTU con cargo a sus recursos propios por valor de hasta 30 millones de EUR.
