    As a key player in the world of development finance, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has participated in the 2016 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)  in Washington D.C. (USA) through a delegation led by President Werner Hoyer. These events are among the most important in the calendars of all organisations involved in international development and the EIB is proud to contribute its expertise. 

    Our delegation’s schedule included a series of high-level events and bilateral meetings. Key events included:

    • Global Connect Initiative event.  EIB President Werner Hoyer joined US Secretary of State, John Kerry and World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim on 14th April for a high-level multi-stakeholder conference to help bridge the digital divide at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. The conference brought together key stakeholders from governments, international organisations, development institutions, the private sector, and civil society with the goal of sharing best practices and identifying areas for cooperation with the aim of connecting more than 40 billion people by 2020.     • 8th Annual Bertelsmann Foundation - Financial Times Conference on Migration Flows: Facts, Fiction and the Politics in between. President Hoyer presented the EIB’s analysis of the refugee and migration crisis alongside Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the Eurogroup & Minister of Finance of the Netherlands, and EU Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Kristalina Georgieva.
    • International Conference for the New Financing Initiative to Support the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) RegionPresident Hoyer represented the EIB at a ministerial pledging session, following-up from the International Stakeholders' Roundtable Meeting for the MENA Region that took place in Lima in late 2015. The event explored new and innovative financing modalities to support countries in the MENA region affected by the Syrian refugee crisis, conflict and economic instability and discussed developments and progress since Lima. Read the full speech here.
    • Global Infrastructure Forum.This was the flagship event on collaborative financing for infrastructure development in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. The event was jointly organised with the United Nations, key development partners in infrastructure and the multilateral development banks (MDBs). President Hoyer contributed to the discussion on behalf of the EIB in a panel alongside the other MDBs.
