The EIB works with Malawi to strengthen essential infrastructure, boost economic resilience and support climate-smart growth. Our partnership helps improve livelihoods, expand access to services and advance the country’s long-term development priorities.
In Malawi, we have focused on:
Agriculture is central to Malawi’s economy and social well-being. We work with local banks to unlock finance for smallholder farmers, helping them adapt to climate change and recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These efforts form part of the Team Europe Kulima initiative, which addresses barriers to agricultural investment and strengthens food security.
We are supporting improvements to the M1 Road, a key national and regional transport corridor. The 301-kilometre upgrade will reduce transport costs, shorten travel times and facilitate exports. It will also strengthen international links with neighbouring Zambia and improve access to the port of Dar es Salaam, contributing to regional integration and trade.
