The project concerns the rehabilitation of the historic trade fair site in Montjuic, in the City of Barcelona (Spain).
The aim is to to renovate and modernise the existing Fira de Barcelona facilities at the Montjuïc site in order to extend their useful life, improve functionality and accessibility, and enhance their integration within the surrounding urban environment. The investment seeks to address technical obsolescence and capacity constraints, improve energy efficiency and environmental performance in line with EU requirements, and maintain the venue's attractiveness and competitiveness for national and international events. In parallel, the Project supports better integration of the venue within the surrounding urban fabric through improvements to public space and connectivity. By upgrading key exhibition infrastructure, the Project aims to address growing national and international demand, reinforce Fira de Barcelona's competitiveness in the global events market, and generate lasting economic and social benefits for the City of Barcelona, as part of broader urban regeneration efforts.
Where and if applicable, and based on a risk-based approach as defined in the EIB Group Environmental and Social Policy, the requirements of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive 2011/92/EU as amended by Directive 2014/52/EU, Birds Directive 2009/147/EC and Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC will be checked during appraisal.
The Bank will require the promoter to ensure that contracts for the implementation of the Project have been and will be tendered in accordance with the applicable EU procurement legislation: Directive 2014/23/EU / 2014/24/EU / as well as Directive 89/665/EEC as interpreted by the Court of Justice of the EU, with publication of tender notices in the EU Official Journal, as and where required. Information on awarded main suppliers/contractors for the implementation of the envisaged Operation is not available.
