In the current debate around the environment, energy, urban development, economics and social thinking, what are the best ideas challenging conventional wisdom or proposing different paths to a sustainable future?

The European Investment Bank is offering its Big Ideas series to elevate the debate. We are inviting prominent personalities and thought leaders to describe their experiences and outline their ideas for a better world. As a multilateral development institution that provides long-term financing for projects around the world, the EU bank wants to be an engaged actor in finding solutions.

Starting this week, the EIB is publishing on its website a series of essays by public intellectuals, businesspeople, environmentalists and innovators. Their contributions help us reflect on the wider influence that the EU bank can have on a community, and on how we can help improve people’s lives. These essays will strive to stimulate a wider debate on how to make our planet a better place to live and prosper.

In the first essay On water, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, award-winning French photographer, journalist and environmentalist, calls for long-term thinking and more action to safeguard our natural resources.

Other essays will feature Foster + Partners on how architecture can connect different worlds, the Turkish economist Fatih Birol on renewables, and the American social theorist Jeremy Rifkin on the Third Industrial Revolution. All essays can be found on the EIB site, eib.org.
