Vanessa Butera was appointed Deputy Director General of the Group Information Systems (GIS) Directorate, effective 1 March 2026. In this capacity, she also leads the Digital Transformation and Innovation Department, where she oversees four strategic transversal pillars: the Digital Transformation Office, the Artificial Intelligence division, the Business Relationship division, and the Group’s Data and Information Governance framework.
Prior to this role, Vanessa served as Director of the Data and Information Solutions Department from May 2023. During her tenure, she scaled up the EIB Group’s AI Lab and strengthened the governance of data and information, content, and collaborative management systems across the Group.
Vanessa’s career at the EIB began in 2006 as a Financial Reporting Officer within CFC. In 2010, she transitioned to the OPS Directorate, where she spent over a decade in operational roles. Her work focused on a diverse portfolio of corporate and financial institution clients across Central and South-East Europe, and she also led the implementation unit in charge of monitoring activities for neighbouring countries. In 2019, she was appointed Head of Division to support IT front office activities, playing a key role in the inception of the EIB Group’s digital transformation programme.
Before joining the Bank, Vanessa built her foundational expertise as an external auditor at Deloitte and Ernst & Young. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration from the Université Catholique de Louvain (2002), which included an Erasmus exchange at Bocconi University (2001). Furthermore, she completed the Cycle des Hautes Études Européennes at ENA (now INSP) in 2019. Vanessa speaks French, English, Italian and Greek.
