El BEI en el Caribe: prioridades y proyectos

Description

Nuestras prioridades en los 15 Estados y los 13 Países y Territorios de Ultramar (PTU) del Caribe son el desarrollo del sector privado, incluidos el sector financiero y las microempresas y pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes); las infraestructuras básicas, como la electricidad, el agua, el transporte y las telecomunicaciones; y la acción por el clima, que comprende tanto la mitigación del cambio climático como la adaptación a sus efectos.

Actualmente, la región del Caribe se compone de economías relativamente aisladas que dependen en gran medida del turismo, razón por la cual la economía mundial tiene una enorme repercusión en su prosperidad económica. Las tasas de crecimiento son considerablemente heterogéneas, lo que refleja la escasa diversificación económica de algunos países. La integración regional continúa siendo un importante desafío y es, por tanto, un aspecto que el BEI ha de tener en cuenta a la hora de proporcionar apoyo.

Los países del Caribe son muy vulnerables a los efectos negativos del cambio climático. A finales de 2015, el Banco se comprometió a elevar de aquí a 2020 el porcentaje de las inversiones realizadas fuera de la UE que se destinan a la acción por el clima del 25% al 35% del volumen total de préstamos. Dado que somos una de las mayores entidades financieras del mundo en el ámbito de la acción por el clima, estamos bien situados para realizar esa inversión, y también para colaborar en proyectos relacionados con el clima en todos los sectores.

El BEI ha invertido aproximadamente 1 600 millones de EUR en el Caribe desde 1978, cuando se firmó la primera operación, y 515 millones de EUR desde que el Acuerdo de Cotonú comenzó a aplicarse en 2004. Históricamente, estas cifras se han traducido en 165 proyectos realizados en países del Caribe y 46 en los PTU de esta región. Esta inversión se ha financiado con el Instrumento de Ayuda a la Inversión ACP, recursos propios del BEI y la Dotación para la Financiación de Impacto en el caso de los proyectos que presentan un mayor riesgo, pero también tienen un mayor impacto.

EIB Working Paper 2026/02 - AI adoption, productivity and employment: Evidence from European firms

This paper finds that artificial intelligence adoption boosts labour productivity in European firms without reducing employment, at least in the short-term, and highlights the importance of complementary investments in software, data and training.
