BEYOND BORDERS, a dialogue based on masterpieces of the EIB’s art collection

At challenging times for Europe’s identity and value, art can offer new perspectives on our approach to borders. The exhibition ‘BEYOND BORDERS, a dialogue based on masterpieces of the EIB’s art collection’ at the Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain - in Brussels from 6^th September until 24^th February 2019 provides a great opportunity to embark on an interesting journey beyond borders of the contemporary art landscape. Moreover, it is an invitation to explore the concept of borders, in their broadest sense, at a time when it hits the headlines every day.  

With the exhibition at the occasion of its 60^th anniversary, the EIB is seeking to deepen cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.  Comprising not only 30 works from EU artists featured in the EIB collection, but also embracing artworks by North-African or Middle-Eastern artists, in conversation with each other, the show takes the exploration of the theme of borders to a new level, giving examples of the transcending of frontiers or crossing of borders – territorial, intellectual or artistic. Through paintings, photographs, videos, works on paper, sculptures and installations, this project also investigates notions of spatial and visual limitations and confinement. The show features both what are now mainstream historical examples, but also what are still considered to be more experimental works, thus contrasting historical views with more recent interpretations.

The exhibition aims to encourage interaction between cultures and a deeper “East-West dialogue” about how we can build our shared future, globally. Supporting close relations with EU neighbours, in particular through its Economic Resilience Initiative, is at the core of the EIB’s activity beyond Europe’s borders. As requested by the EU Member States, the EIB provides development finance in the EU neighbourhood, creating opportunities supporting inclusive growth and jobs, digitalisation, climate finance for clean energy, and many other sectors.
