Following the formation of the new Hellenic Government, Mr Vasilios Rapanos was appointed Minister of Finance on 20 June 2012, succeeding Mr George Zanias.

Mr Rapanos also becomes EIB Governor for the Hellenic Republic.

Before his appointment, Mr Rapanos, born in 1947, served as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Greece since December 2009.

He is Professor at the University of Athens, where he has been teaching Economic Analysis and Public Economics since 1992.

From 2007 to 2009, he was Research Associate at the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research in Greece.

During the period 2000-2004, he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

From 1998 to 2000, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization and from 1995 to 1998 he was Deputy Governor and later Governor at the National Mortgage Bank of Greece.

Mr Rapanos has also served in several posts as Counselor at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as Counselor to the Permanent Greek Delegation to the European Union, and as Deputy Head of the Greek Delegation to the OECD.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the Athens University of Economics & Business, a Master's degree in Economics from Lakehead University (Canada) and a PhD in Economics from Queen's University (Canada).
