About

The Asia Investment Facility (AIF) promotes investments in Asia that provide access to essential services and infrastructure, create economic opportunities and jobs, with a focus on sustainable development and reducing inequality. The facility’s goal is to mobilise loans and other support for those projects that struggle to raise the required funding on the market. The AIF fills these funding gaps by pooling grant resources from EU partners and catalysing additional investment. Small and medium-sized businesses and projects that seek to improve regional integration can also benefit from AIF funding.

Geographic scope

The AIF finances projects in these countries:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

The facility can also finance regional projects covering two or more of the above countries.

What is blending?

Blending involves the strategic use of a limited amount of grant resources to catalyse additional financing for development projects. Grants are often combined with loans, equity, beneficiary resources or other forms of financing, with the aim of de-risking projects and making them bankable. Blending allows partners to get the most out of their grant resources and enhance their overall development impact.
