Following the resignation of the Minister of Finance of the Portuguese Republic, Ms Maria Luís Albuquerque was appointed as Minister of State and Finance on 2 July 2013. She also becomes EIB Governor for the Portuguese Republic, succeeding Mr Vítor Gaspar.

Born in Braga in 1967, she graduated in Economics from Lusíada University in Lisbon in 1991 and has a Master’s Degree in Monetary and Financial Economics from the School of Economics and Management, Technical University of Lisbon (1997).

She served at the Directorate General of Treasury and Finance between 1996 and 1999 and at the Ministry of Economy from 1999 to 2001.

Ms Albuquerque also worked as an advisor to the Secretary of State for Treasury and Finance in 2001.

From 2001 to 2007, she was Director of the Department of Financial Management at REFER, the national rail company.

During the period from June 2011 to July 2013, she served as Secretary of State for the Treasury. Ms Albuquerque also taught at Lusíada University, the Institute of Economics and Management and at Moderna University (Setúbal) between 1991 and 2006.
