ONCE is dedicating its Wednesday, 12 December ticket to the 60th anniversary of the European Investment Bank (EIB). 5.5 million tickets distributed across Spain will bear the image of the EU bank, which has worked to promote European cohesion since 1958 by providing financing on favourable terms to projects in line with the EU's policy priorities.

In September, the two institutions signed an agreement via which the EIB provided EUR 35m of Juncker Plan funds to Ilunion (part of the ONCE social group), the EU bank's first loan to a social economy company in Spain. The financing will be used to facilitate the company's investment in energy efficiency and in the research and development of new technologies for people with disabilities.

EIB Vice-President Emma Navarro thanked ONCE for its help in celebrating the Bank's 60th anniversary and highlighted “the EU bank's contribution to financing projects that have been key to the transformation Spain has seen over the last four decades, making it possible to implement major infrastructure projects such as the AVE and the construction of T4 at Madrid Barajas airport, but also to support SMEs. Whether big or small, these projects benefit millions of people every day.

ONCE President Miguel Carballeda emphasised that “working together with the EIB enables our organisation to continue making progress in social and workplace inclusion for people with disabilities, and to invest in caring for the environment and responsible management in all of its activities.

The EU bank: together for 60 years

The EIB was founded by the Treaty of Rome and is owned by the EU Member States. Since its creation, the EIB has provided over EUR 1.1tn to help implement 11 800 projects.

The EIB began operating in Spain in 1981, before it joined the EU. In its 37 years of activity in the country, the EU bank has provided EUR 185bn to support more than 1 000 projects, most of which were to develop the transport network and infrastructure, support small companies and supply innovation.

The EIB works to support projects helping to achieve the EU's objectives with four main priorities: infrastructure development, fostering innovation, supporting SMEs and stimulating climate action. EIB financing always offers favourable conditions, both in terms of interest rates and maturities.
