The EIB signed loan agreements for 96 environmental projects, amounting to EUR 10.9 billion and representing 32% of total lending.
Direct loans to EU countries:
EUR 9.6 billion for 78 environmental projects. This represents 34% of the total individual lending in the EU, meeting the EIB target of 30-35% of environmental direct loans in the EU (Corporate Operations Plan 2006-2008).

Sustainable Urban Transport Projects and Urban Renewal Schemes: EUR 4.6 billion (42% of environmental direct loans) of which:
- EUR 4 billion in the EU
- EUR 0.6 billion in the former Acceding (Bulgaria and Romania) and Accession countriesEUR 2.6 billion for sustainable transportEUR 2 billion for urban renewal
Water Supply and Sanitation Projects: EUR 2.6 billion (circa 25% of environmental direct loans) of which:
- EUR 2.1 billion in the EU
- EUR 474 million in the former Acceding Countries (Bulgaria and Romania), the Mediterranean Partner Countries and the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.
Tackling climate change: EUR 2.3 billion (21% of environmental direct loans):
- EUR 1,499 million for reducing GHG emissions
- EUR 506 million for fostering renewable energy sources
- EUR 317million for energy saving
The Bank encourages/strengthens a more rational use of energy in all type of projects it appraises.
