Signatory Banks

Outlines the approach of the main European-based multilateral financial institutions - Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), European Investment Bank (EIB), Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) and Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) - to environmental considerations, and shows that EU environmental principles, standards and practices provide the main benchmark for their respective financing activities throughout their regions of operation, not just among EU Member States, where such requirements are mandatory, but also in the near neighbours of the EU and other regions of the World.

Promotion of a healthy environment has been established as an unequivocal EU objective. Through their environment policy, the CEB, the EBRD, the EIB, the NEFCO and the NIB have oriented themselves according to Article 2 and 6 of the Amsterdam Treaty, which require high levels of environmental protection, amelioration of environmental quality as well as the integration of environmental dimensions into other sector policies. These five institutions put into practice their commitment to attaining high environmental standards especially through their investment activities.
