Head of Unit, Cleaner and Sustainable Production, UNIDO

Rene Van Berkel (PhD) joined the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in 2008 as Unit Chief, Cleaner and Sustainable Production Unit. In his current role he leads UNIDO’s contribution to the joint global programme with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) in developing and transition economies. The Programme supports recipient countries to develop technical capacities, policies and financial and other enabling instruments to implement RECP methods, practices and technologies that improve the productive use of resources, including water, reduce waste and emission generation and foster human development. The Programme is active in 42 countries globally, including several in the Mediterranean region.
Prior to joining UNIDO, Dr Van Berkel worked as an independent consultant in eco-efficiency, industrial ecology and sustainable technology, for several United Nations agencies, CSIRO Minerals (Australia) and National Institute for Environmental Studies (Japan). From 1999 to 2006 he was Australia’s first full professor of Cleaner Production at Curtin University of Technology in Perth.
During this period he also convened the Western Australian Sustainable Industry Group, a public private partnership that aimed to demonstrate and advocate business contributions to sustainable development.
From 1989 to 1999 he held various research and leadership positions at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Dr Van Berkel authored over 200 publications covering different aspects and applications of cleaner production, industrial ecology, environmental technology development and sustainability management.
Dr Van Berkel is a Dutch national with BSc and MSc degrees in Environmental Hygiene from the Wageningen Agricultural State University (The Netherlands) and PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
