The project forms part of TEN-T Priority Projects no. 22 and no. 23, respectively Railway Axis Athens-Sofia-Budapest-Vienna-Prague-Nuremberg/Dresden and Railway Axis Gdansk-Warsaw-Brno/Bratislava-Vienna. It concerns the first phase of the reconstruction of the Břeclav Railway Node located in South Moravia, halfway between Brno and Bratislava near the Czech borders with Austria and Slovakia. Line speeds will be increased from 80 km/h to 130 km/h in the station vicinity.
The project main objective is to optimise capacity and performance of the existing infrastructure in the Břeclav node for both passengers and freight traffic.

Environmental aspectsThe EIA process was executed for the full reconstruction of the Břeclav railway node, not just the first phase seeking EIB finance, in accordance with the applicable legislation, notably the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and the EIA Directive 97/117/EC as amended, transposed in the Czech Republic into Act 100/2001 Coll. on the Environmental Impact Assessment. The competent authority assessed that the project did not require an EIA and issued the EIA negative screening decision in December 2005. A second statement with further clarification was subsequently issued in January 2011.
The project crosses a Natura 2000 site, Soutok-Tvrdonicko. An assessment of the impact on this site revealed no significant negative impacts, supporting the statement to that effect by the competent authority for nature conservation.
EU procurement directives (2004/17/EC, 2004/18/EC) have been transposed into Czech legislation by the Act No. 137/2006 Coll. The contract notices for the international open tender were published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
