Energy efficiency is the most cost effective and rational way of reducing emissions and improving the security of the energy supply. In line with this approach, the EIB supports projects that contribute to the promotion of long-term energy efficiency.

In 2011, EIB lending for energy efficiency amounted to nearly EUR 1.3bn. EIB financing of such projects supports the EU’s goal of increasing energy efficiency in the Union by 20% by the year 2020 so as to reduce energy consumption.

The EIB supports the EU’s goal of low-carbon and climate- resilient growth within and outside the Union. The EIB’s financing in these sectors is one of the largest among international financial institutions: in 2011, the Bank invested almost EUR 18bn in climate action.

Supporting sustainable, competitive and secure energy in Europe

Promoting sustainable, competitive and secure energy for Europe is one of the European Union’s strategic priorities. As the bank of the European Union, the EIB has reflected this by tripling its financing operations in this area between 2006 and 2010 (from EUR 4bn to EUR 14.6bn).
