This study analyses the achievements and perspectives of biotechnology, the structure and evolution of the markets for the products and processes and the availability of financial resources. It also considers ethical, health, environmental and regulatory implications, patents and protection of intellectual property rights issues. It goes on to identify the difficulties of obtaining adequate funding and explains what role the EIB can play in filling this gap today, in the i2i framework and in close cooperation with the Commission and other relevant parties.
