The EIB’s Management Committee has appointed Klaus Trömel as Secretary General of the Bank. The Secretary General will provide support to the President, the Management Committee, the Board of Directors and the Bank’s Governors.

Klaus Trömel, a German national, began his career as an analyst at the Hewlett-Packard European Headquarters in Geneva, before working as a trade and pre-export finance officer. He joined the EIB in 1989 in the Directorate for Lending Operations in Europe. In 2000, he was appointed Head of Division at the Risk Management Directorate, before being named Director of Transaction Management and Restructuring in 2007 and Director General of the Risk Management Directorate in 2011. In 2014, he was named Director General and Head of the EIB’s Lending Operations. Mr. Trömel holds a degree in Civil Engineering and Business from the Technische Universität in Berlin and an MBA from Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University in Houston.

The Management Committee also appointed Marjut Santoni as Deputy Secretary General.

Marjut Santoni, a Finnish national, holds a degree in Economics and Finance from Hagen University and Augsburg University. She began her career at Dresdner Bank before joining the Directorate of General Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission in 1996. She held various roles in the field of SME and infrastructure financing until 2013 and was also advisor to the Commission’s members on the EIF Board of Directors from 2001 until June 2007. In August 2013, she was appointed Deputy Chief Executive of the EIF and was responsible for Risk Management & Compliance; Finance & Budget; and Middle, Information and Back office, including Information Technology.

Mr. Trömel succeeds outgoing Secretary General Alfonso Quejereta, who retired this month after 29 years in the EIB. Mrs Santoni replaces Mr Luca Lazzaroli who has taken up the post of Director General, Deputy Head of EIB’s Lending Operations.
