UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited world leaders from government, finance, business, and civil society to the Climate Summit 2014 this 23 September to gather momentum for stepping up climate action. In the run-up Mr Ban Ki-moon has asked leaders to bring bold announcements and actions to the Summit that will reduce emissions and strengthen climate resilience.

EIB President Werner Hoyer and Vice President for the Environment and Climate, Jonathan Taylor will attend the high-level gathering to support the UN Secretary General in his ambitions and raise awareness for the EIB`s leading role on climate action. In addition to the main UN event on 23 September, there will be a variety of other events around the Summit at which EIB representatives will present. Vice President Jonathan Taylor will, for example, present EIB`s various products and initiatives on climate at the Climate Finance Ministerial. At an OECD event on climate finance tracking, the EIB’s Head of Environment, Climate and Social Policy will present the “Joint Report on MDB Climate Finance 2013” which has been put together under the EIB`s lead in 2014. EIB will also be taking part in the Climate and Clean Air Coalition meetings, targeting reductions in Short Lived Climate Pollutants. Finally, EIB`s finance department has organized its own event where EIB green bonds and innovative climate finance products will be discussed with investors.

This year’s UN Climate Summit is particularly important because it aims at gathering political will in the run-up to COP21 in Paris where a meaningful legal agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol must be agreed upon if unmanageable climate change is to be avoided in the future.
