After the success of the previous edition, the EIB was pleased to pursue its sponsorship to the African Microfinance Week (AMW) in 2015. The AMW is the major annual meeting of the microfinance industry in Africa, bringing together microfinance practitioners, related sectors and actors of inclusive finance. The AMW is designed to provide a platform to exchange and reflect on the industry and to actively promote and accelerate financial inclusion and economic growth on the continent. The 2015 theme “Accelerating Innovative Rural Finance in Africa” gathered 547 participants from 49 countries – including 36 African countries – to attend the five days of conferences meetings and training sessions held between 29 June and 3 July.

This event was organised by the regional African microfinance networks (AMT, AFMIN, AFRACA and MAIN), supported by ADA in partnership with the Luxembourg cooperation. The EIB, whose microfinance portfolio is highly invested in the region, was a sponsor for the event. Luca Lazzaroli, one of the EIB Director Generals, gave his opening speech alongside Romain Schneider, Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Luxembourg and Moustapha Diop, Minister in charge of Microfinance and Social Economy, Senegal. Edvardas Bumsteinas, the Head of Microfinance Unit, was a panelist during the plenary session dedicated to the financial products to be designed to boost rural and agricultural finance in Africa, along with private players and other DFIs’ representatives.
