EIB Project Carbon Footprint Methodologies present in detail EIB’s approach to calculating the carbon footprints of the projects it finances. The Bank completed a 3-year pilot phase (2009-2011) during which time the methodologies have been refined and the calculations routinely incorporated into project appraisals. This process is now mainstreamed into regular project appraisal work.

Individual project carbon footprint results have been available on the project Environmental and Social Datasheets (ESDS) since January 2012 and the Bank reports the aggregated results annually as part of its Carbon Footprint Exercise.

Whilst project carbon footprinting is mainstreamed into the Bank’s operations it remains a work in progress. The Bank works closely with other financial institutions, consultants and other stakeholders in its footprinting work and welcomes further feedback on the methodologies.

The methodologies presented here are for project carbon footprinting and should not be confused with the carbon footprint of the EIB Group’s travel and building stock in Luxembourg which is reported on in a separate exercise. Information on this exercise can be located at: http://www.eib.org/infocentre/publications/all/carbon-footprint-report-2017.htm
