The EIB’s environmental and social policies are governed by the EIB Statement of Environmental and Social Principles and Standards (2009).
In addition, a number of sector lending policies are currently in operation, which have some environmental and social components, and more targeted climate action objectives. Over the last few years, the EIB has developed and approved a number of sector strategies, such as for clean energy for Europe, transport and water. Each of these documents is designed to shape the Bank’s activity in a particular sector, notably by placing restrictions on the eligibility of particular types of project, setting out how the Bank interprets the quality of projects and how it can play a role in increasing project quality, and finally by proposing tailored instruments – either financial products or technical assistance – to promote particular types of project.
