The organisation subscribes to various economic, environmental and social charters and principles. These are listed below:

• The EIB has endorsed the European Principles for the Environment, in which the signatories to the declaration have a shared responsibility towards protecting but also improving the environment in the interests of sustainable development.
• Since 28 of June 2007, the EIB applies the Aarhus Regulation EC (No) 1367/2006  on public access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters. The Regulation provides for the application of the provisions of the Aarhus Convention to EU institutions and bodies.
• The EIB and DG Environment signed a Memorandum of Understanding in May 2002 setting up working procedures on environmental aspects between the EIB and the European Commission.
• The EIB makes an explicit reference that it supports the implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in the “EIB Statement of Environmental and Social Principles and Standards”, approved on 3 February 2009 (Art. 43, Environmental Standards in the Rest of the World). The EIB is an observer on the EITI board and supports the EITI, which was established to encourage and help resource-rich countries to put in place procedures for publishing verified information on payments made and revenues received.
• The EIB is also a signatory to the Corporate Governance Development Framework alongside other development finance institutions and applies it to all its equity operations.
• The EIB adopted the Client Protection Principles in Microfinance in 2009 and actively promotes responsible finance principles in its microfinance operations
